Dojo Kun

The dojo kun states the basic philosophy of Shotokan Karate. According to Master Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan Karate, the dojo kun should not only be considered as a set of rules for conduct within the dojo, it should be a guide to how we live our everyday lifes.

The Japanese kanji for each principle of the dojo kun is shown below, along with phonetic pronunciations and an English Interpretation for each.

There is also a video of Richard Amos Sensei providing help on the Japanese pronunciation of each principle. The video also provides a more in-depth understanding of what each principle means.
